COVID-19 FAQs

UROP Location Form

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, students with MIT appointments (including UROPs) may be planning to work remotely in foreign countries. MIT has developed a framework for allowing eligible students to proceed with anticipated appointments from outside the US.  This framework is available here.

Note that due to international tax and compliance issues, MIT is not able to offer paid UROPs to undergraduate students not physically located in the United States.  However, students living abroad may opt for a credit-only UROP.

UROP projects intended to be conducted in Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea, the Crimea region of Ukraine, China (including Hong Kong), Russia, or Saudi Arabia will require a review by representatives in ISO, VPRVPF, and OGC. They will make recommendations based on factors and principles set out in the guidelines, and decisions will be issued accordingly. Please note that UROP work intended to be conducted in Iran, Syria, Cuba, North Korea, or the Crimea region of Ukraine may not proceed until advanced approval from MIT’s export control officers is received. For work in China (including Hong Kong), Russia, or Saudi Arabia, you may proceed unless otherwise contacted.

Please complete this form to let us know your planned UROP remote research location, ASAP.  Do not hesitate to reach out to the UROP Office with any questions or concerns.
