Over 1.2B people presently live in slums and this this number is expected to grow to 2B or 24% of the world’s projected population of 8.5B in 2030. An area of great need in slums (with potentially outsize impact) is care for pregnant women (antenatal care) to impact the high levels of maternal mortality. Approximately 300,000 women, mostly in their teens and early 20s die during labor annually. Improving antenatal care equally importantly reduces infant mortality at birth significantly and ensures health for the mother and child. This project will work with a slum/s to explore innovative solutions to address this issue.
Experience in designing/building wearables would be very valuable. Interest or experience in healthcare, working in slums, would be an added plus. EECS preferred but not essential:Ability to devote at least 10 hours per week. MULTIPLE POSITIONS.
