Sustainable / Bio-based mechanical metamaterials (Biovoxels)
MAS: Media Arts and Sciences
September 10, 2020
Patritsia Maria Stathatou: firstname.lastname@example.org
This project will test and characterize mechanical metamaterials made from bio-based / biodegradable materials. The parts of these metamaterials will be produced via different processes, including injection molding, 3D printing and laser cutting, given the different types of bio-based materials that will be used. After production, parts will be joined together with fasteners, such as rivets. Assembled parts will form different system configurations, which will be tested to characterize their mechanical properties. Life cycle / carbon footprint assessments will be run in parallel to assess and compare the environmental impact of different configurations for various applications. This is an in-lab UROP experience, students must be living on-campus to participate.
Creative MechE students with background / experience or interest in material science and digital fabrication / CNC machining.
