Project Description

Saving Face offers a sub-5$, quickly deployable, open source solution to help people to avoid touching their faces, that could be used by the 3.5 billion people who carry a smartphone (video: https://vimeo.com/412983908, website: https://www.media.mit.edu/projects/saving-face/overview/). We are developing an application that uses a SONAR-inspired approach to detect proximity between hands and face and warns the user with an alarm when they get too close. It works by sending ultrasound pulses from commercial earphones and listening for the reflection of an approaching hand. The UROP student will collaborate in the R&D efforts of the project and the process of deploying it in the App stores. The work can be fully remote and independent of location. This UROP may be taken for pay, credit, or volunteer.

Desired background: app development, Java, Swift, signal processing, Machine Learning or Bluetooth. If you don't have the background, but you are highly motivated to participate in the project, please apply.
