Project Description

The ability to visualize scientific concepts through drawings and dynamic system behaviors through animations is vital for scientific communication. A well-prepared visualization can often convey complex ideas more efficiently than plain text and live a vivid impression on the audience. In the COVID-19 season when people are staying apart, the MIT Mechatronics Research Lab is actively working on a variety of web-based visualization tasks based on previous research results. Example aspects include publication summary list with visual aids, virtual reality interactive 3D model demonstration of CAD drawings, augmented reality based physical process visualization, etc. We are also preparing educational documents for a precision instrumentation curriculum design to be offered when in-person semester resumes. Students with interest in mechatronic system design, 3D modeling, simulation and microscopy are highly encouraged to apply. UROP student can start as soon as possible during IAP (20-30 hours per week) and continue into 2021 Spring (10-12 hours per week) either for credit or for pay. The work would be conducted remote online without requirement of in-person activities. Previous experience with web programming (HTML/CSS, JavaScript) is required. Skills that are helpful for this work include: typesetting in LaTeX, CAD modeling (Solidworks), Simulation (Matlab Simulink), 3D animation (Blender).
