We are a collective of artists, architects, digital geographers, and journalists exploring "open collectives" — voluntary and dynamic groups of people sharing common goals and values, combining the scale and instantaneous connectivity of online networks with the kinship created in physical space through face-to-face interaction. We're particularly interested in digital and urban architectural platforms seeking to leverage the power of solidarity to strengthen economic sovereignty, housing affordability, communal self-determination, and mutual aid. We seek UROP researchers to help create content to populate our Open Collectives: Interactive Debate, an online companion to an exhibition traveling to prominent venues (that cannot yet be named) from Fall 2020 through 2021. Together, both exhibition and interactive debate invite visitors to explore collectives through their economics, size, porosity, platform, and governance, provoking new ways of thinking about the design for solidarity today. The online component combines an archive of historical and contemporary precedents with fiery debates on the urgency of collectives amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Accessed via the Web and social media, this debate invites the participation and knowledge from audiences beyond scheduled exhibitions. By connecting creative ideas, key words, and archival examples in new ways, our individual thoughts are organized into visualizations that form new collective impressions of how we live together. UROP students will be supervised by Marisa Morán Jahn (ACT, CMS/W), Rafi Segal (Architecture/Urbanism), and Sarah Williams (DUSP).
