Project Description

The Civic Data Design Lab (CDDL) in partnership Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) is working to develop a wireless mesh network in public spaces in Kibera, one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. The need for the internet in Kibera has increased due to Covid-19 and we have accelerated the plans for installing the internet hubs with our partners at KDI’s public spaces. The research sets out to test whether the implementation of free wireless hubs within Kibera along with the development of educational materials, will improve internet adoption. The research will involve the development of a baseline survey to test to understand current internet use. Development of training materials for the installation which will be performed by local residents. Development of educational materials for Kibera residents about the possibilities of the internet. The researcher will also develop a literature review for the work on internet use in informal settlements.
