Literature review to support a study of the Effects of Covid-19 on the Coffee Industry A Root Capital-MIT D-Lab Partnership The Covid-19 pandemic has generated disastrous ripple effects across world markets. For coffee, the world’s second most traded commodity, the effects have been dramatic and widespread. From an insufficient supply of farm labor and shipping containers in Peru, to the closure of coffee shops across the United States, actors up and down the value chain have been severely impacted. To shed light on the effects of Covid-19 across the coffee value chain, Root Capital and MIT D-Lab are gearing up to launch a three-year research project. Although it is focused on the effects of the Covid-19 crisis, the study will also highlight strengths and vulnerabilities that are relevant to other global risks, including climate and economic crises and identify strategies and tools the industry can potentially adopt to become resilient to inevitable future shocks. To support the study, MIT D-Lab is looking for a student to produce a literature review over the course of the fall term on the effects of Covid-19 on small holder farmers. The literature review would require 5-10 hours of work every week, including reporting findings to members of Root Capital and MIT D-Lab in bi-weekly meetings.
