We are looking for a UROP who is interested in understanding and modeling the system level flow of resources and technologies in closed or semi-closed Human Habitat systems on Earth and in Space. The UROP position covers IAP and/or spring and summer 2020 and involves learning and evolving the HabNet simulation environment. HabNet is a Matlab-based toolbox for modeling closed human habitat systems, including the state of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide etc… emitted and absorbed by humans and plants in closed ecosystems on Earth and Moon/Mars. The research includes calibrating HabNet against experimental results from NASA, applying it to new use cases such as the Lunar Gateway and a future Mars-based settlement and setting the stage for generalizing it to larger problems in industrial ecology. One of the main scientific goals of the project is to find the optimal rate of loop closure that will minimize cost and mass, while maximizing long term sustainability.
