Global Market Demand Estimation for Urban Air Mobility

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is an envisaged air taxi service which can contribute towards addressing the mobility challenges in congested urban areas. UAM would use vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with 1-4 seats and would transport passengers in urban areas over distances of possibly up to 100 km (62 miles). As such, it can contribute towards reducing travel times and might reduce the congestion of urban infrastructure by using the airspace. UAM is a rapidly developing field with an estimated potential annual market value of $500B in the U.S. alone. While initial analyses at MIT’s Lab for Aviation and the Environment find substantial market potentials, they also provide evidence that the attainable market is likely significantly smaller due to infrastructure restrictions, weather restrictions or airspace restrictions. This UROP project will contribute to a UAM optimization project at the system-level by collecting data and developing a top-down approach for estimating potential demand for UAM services in urban areas around the globe. The project will involve collecting data as indicators of UAM demand and Python for the data analysis. The results are expected to inform aircraft manufacturers and cities about potentials for future UAM development.
