Experimental investigation of isotope fractionation during microbial methanogenesis adsa
12: Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences
Feb 13, 2020
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different masses. Microbes - as they "eat" and "breathe" - leave distinct patterns in the distribution and arrangement of isotopes within the molecules they consume or produce. This project will experimentally investigate the effects of environmental and physiological factors on such isotope effects during microbial methane production. A UROP student will be trained in several laboratory skills including microbial cultivation and setting up a bioelectrochemical experiments.
No specific prerequisites but this project requires basic understanding of/ interest in microbiology and chemistry; priority will be given to students with experience in microbial culturing techniques.
