Project Description
We seek to deploy a free-of-charge app that uses machine learning and signal processing algorithms to significantly reduce the risk of acquiring SARS-CoV-2 or other pathogens through surface transmission. The app uses commercial earphones to alert users whenever they are about to touch their faces, preventing hand-to-face contact and infection through the eyes, nose, or mouth (demo: https:/vimeo.com/412983908 ). Our research so far has generated a functional prototype and won an award from the National Science Foundation. We are currently piloting in the meatpacking industry and doing user studies on behavioral change. The UROP student will be part of the team that is advancing the R&D to scale towards other use cases and exploring other applications of our ultrasound sensing technology (health monitoring, enhancing car safety, improving crypto protocols, etc.). The work can be fully remote and independent of location. Desired background (one or more): Machine Learning, app development, user studies, Java, Swift, signal processing or Bluetooth. If you don't have the background, but you are highly motivated to participate in the project, please apply (camilorq@mit.edu).
