Designing an “Interplanetary Time Device” for the International Space Station - AeroAstro focus

As humanity becomes interplanetary and extends into the solar system, our conceptions of time and space will fundamentally shift. This project aims to develop a device for use in microgravity that provides a physical manifestation of 4D timespace, “tethering” the user to a location in the solar system. The device in development will be a precision-pointing, free-flying device and is slated to be deployed to the International Space Station in 2021 where an astronaut will interact with the device and document their experience. You will work with the research team to design, build, test and deploy this ‘interplanetary time device’. This UROP offers considerable hands-on experience and unique exposure to designing for microgravity and space launch environments. This project is a part of the MIT Space Exploration Initiative, which aims to prototype and design our sci-fi space future.
Strong background in orbital dynamics and experience designing and testing Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS) preferred. Experience in development, implementation and verification of ADCS algorithms including hardware in the loop verification. CubeSat design experience would be relevant.
