We are developing a system to prevent the costly, extensive water damage in buildings caused by ice buildup on roofs in the winter. This is conducted by precisely depositing a liquid deicer to create channels in the ice where the water can discharge. To validate that this is done correctly, we are developing methods to remotely monitor the concentration of deicing fluid in the roofs' runoff. We are continuing this research this summer, and are looking for a UROP to assist the core engineering team to both evaluate the key properties of various liquid deicers, as well as explore different methods for detecting and measuring the solution autonomously. Given current public health considerations, we will be able to accommodate a fully virtual UROP this summer. All necessary materials will be provided by mail. We give preference to students who are able to work on an EST work schedule. The ideal candidate should be a proficient programmer and have experience building and managing databases using cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and GCP. Other desirable skills include machine learning, data analytics, and IoT. Experience with data visualization tools, such as Tableau, is a plus.
