The Poetic Justice Group at the Media Lab is looking for UROPs for A Counting, a site-specific multimedia artwork that counts to 100, playing a different voice and language for every number and displaying the word in the language. Currently, we have over 75 different languages in New York City recorded via our interactive voice response system. We’re working on getting 75 more in NYC by June and creating new versions for other cities. A Counting is currently on view in Who We Are at the Museum of the City of New York. UROPs will assist with researching languages and communities, developing software for data/audio processing and editing including: - Streamlining workflow for adding new languages using pre-existing backend scripts for the downloading, splicing and filtering of phone call recordings - Creating frontend web tools for further editing recordings - Finding speakers of more languages especially of rare, endangered, and indigenous ones - Transcribing languages - Managing participants UROPs are also invited to propose additional ideas and contribute to other projects within Poetic Justice if desired. If you are interested in the intersection of art, social justice, and technology, we welcome you to apply!
