Project Description

(Remote work) The Urban Risk Lab is an interdisciplinary research group, developing technologies to embed disaster risk reduction and preparedness into the design of cities. As a UROP, you will assist in the ongoing development of the RiskMap project. This platform will prove a critical tool for emergency management specially during the current pandemic situation coupled with a disaster can present a complex set of choices to emergency managers for response, evacuation and recovery. As a part of a wider research cohort, we currently have two positions focusing on web development and/or on the use of AI in crisis informatics. As a UROP, Guided by regular one-to-one feedback from the PI and other full-time researchers of the lab, you will work with PI and researchers in the lab to research following aspects: communication for evacuation and shelter management use of machine vision to extract situational intelligence from crowdsourced data to help governments and humanitarian agencies optimize their human and material resources. use of NLP to mediate the crisis communication between shelters and emergency control center to identify and catalog critical needs faced by the shelters
