Project Description

Over the past few months, MIT D-Lab has working on project supported by USAID that is studying how to improve access to affordable bicycles in Sub-Saharan Africa. The team has been conducting a literature review and key informant interviews related to opportunities to leverage bicycles, challenges, and barriers to adoption. This is part of the first phase of the research, which will help the team understand the landscape, narrow down on the research questions, and prioritize the geographic locations for the next phase of the research. As part of this first phase, it would be helpful to map the different bicycle models that are present in Sub-Saharan Africa and the origins of those models. Which models are available? How many bicycles are being imported? Where are those bicycles coming from? Which models are produced in each country? How many bicycles are being imported new versus second-hand? Through this UROP, the student will conduct a literature review and leverage secondary data to answer these questions. The student will create an annotated bibliography and presentation on the findings.
