Project Description

In the future, fabrication machines, such as laser cutters, will be smart enough to figure out minor details that currently require a lot of attention and manual input by users, e.g. material type or thickness. The goal of the project is to create an AI system for characterizing different materials based on their surface textures that are detectable using a low-cost imaging system. For this project, the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Engineering Group at MIT CSAIL is seeking UROPs who will work at the intersection of computer vision and digital fabrication. It involves developing a system to capture images on a Raspberry Pi, processing the images using CNNs, and developing a more intuitive laser cutting user interface for e.g., handling multiple materials simultaneously. Pre-requisites

The project is open to students majoring in electrical engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and other relevant fields. A successful candidate should have experience in one or more of the following: - Programming in Python, C++, or JavaScript - Machine learning libraries such as PyTorch, Keras, or fast.ai - Computer vision/image processing - Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino boards Interests in digital fabrication (laser cutting/3D printing) and human-computer interaction are a plus.
